About George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Located on Westham Island in the Fraser River delta near Richmond, British Columbia, the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary covers over 300 hectares of diversified wetland and agricultural habitat. Established in 1963 and managed by the Nature Trust of British Columbia, it provides a vital refuge for migratory and resident birds. The sanctuary's geography features tidal marshes, dykes, and ponds that support large populations of waterfowl, including Canada geese, snow geese, northern pintails, and hawks, alongside herons and other shorebirds. Its proximity to the Fraser River makes it one of the most important bird sanctuaries on the west coast of Canada. Visitors enjoy the sanctuary's well-maintained network of trails and viewing towers that offer excellent vantage points for birdwatching and photography. Educational programs and guided tours highlight the importance of wetland ecosystems and migratory patterns. The sanctuary is particularly popular during fall and winter months when thousands of geese stop over during migration. The reserve also serves as a research site contributing to avian conservation efforts. Its peaceful natural setting and accessible paths allow visitors of all ages and skill levels to experience British Columbia's rich birdlife and local flora. Wildlife enthusiasts frequently spot bald eagles, river otters, and other species throughout the year, making it a prime destination for nature observation and environmental education.
